Top Five Fishing Spots in and Around Salisbury, NC

If you’re a fisherman, you already know that one of the most relaxing activities a person can do is to grab a rod and reel and head out to the lake to catch some fish. It’s even better if you can find top fishing spots near your home that allow you to take short trips more often. If you’re living in Salisbury, NC, try one of these excellent fishing locations. 

#1: Lake Norman State Park

Just a half an hour away by car, Lake Norman State Park is the home of the largest manmade lake in the state. If you own your own boat, you can access Lake Norman using the free boat launch located on Boat Launch Drive.

You can also rent a kayak or canoe from the Visitor Center, or fish from the shore. You can expect to haul in fish species such as bluegill, perch, crappie, catfish, and several varieties of bass.

#2: Morrow Mountain State Park

Travel 40 minutes from Salisbury and you’ll find yourself at Morrow Mountain State Park, where you can fish from the shore, a pier, or a boat.

Bring your own boat to launch from the free public boat ramp, or rent a canoe or kayak from the park’s boathouse for just $5.00 per hour. This lake is known for its crappie, perch, white bass, striped bass, bluegill, and catfish. You must have a valid North Carolina fishing license to fish here.

#3: Pilot Mountain State Park

If you’re looking for a quaint place to camp and fish, Pilot Mountain State Park is a wonderful choice. You can fish for smallmouth bass, striped bass, and catfish, then paddle your canoe to your campsite on the south bank of the Yadkin River.

There are other, more modern campsites available at this park as well, but if you want a rustic experience, camp at one of the two canoe campsites and truly connect with nature.

#4: Hanging Rock State Park

Travel a little further from Salisbury (about an hour and 15 minutes) to take advantage of the picturesque Hanging Rock State Park. You’ll enjoy spectacular views in this park, as well as abundant fishing opportunities for catfish, sunfish, and bass. You’re sure to catch your fill by either fishing from a boat on the lake, or by wading into the shallower parts of the Dan River.

#5: Andrew Jackson State Park

While motorized boats are not allowed on the lake at Andrew Jackson State Park, you can rent fishing boats for a nominal fee to take advantage of the well-stocked, 18-acre lake.

You can also bring your own boat if it is not motorized and can be hand-carried from the parking area to the lake. You can catch crappie, catfish, bass, and bream, but be sure to have a South Carolina fishing license for this out-of-state fishing spot.
