As the oldest settlement in the west of the state, Salisbury, NC has a long and fascinating history just waiting to be explored. Whether you want to find out more about pre-settlement days, colonial or antebellum history, the American Civil War, or the more recent past, there are historical attractions to inform you about every aspect of the lives and experiences of Salisbury people through time.

4 Fascinating Historical Attractions Worth the Drive From Salisbury, NC

1. Rowan Museum

Housed in the 1854 courthouse, this museum is open Friday to Sunday in the afternoons, and charts the history of the area from its pre-settlement days to the twentieth century. With a huge range of artefacts on display, it tells the story of settlers, miners, soldiers, and residents through the ages.

The courthouse itself survived General Stoneman’s raid during the American Civil War and, with its graceful balcony and antebellum architecture, it stands as a fascinating example of history in itself.

2. Historic Salisbury National Cemetery

This cemetery was first established by Confederate forces as a burial ground for Union soldiers who died in Salisbury prison, which had an estimated 10,000 prisoners by 1864 and one of the highest jail death rates. In addition, the cemetery is a burial site for Confederate, World War, and other veterans.

With beautifully maintained grounds and thought-provoking memorials, it’s a fascinating and reflective place to contemplate the lives and sacrifices of those who rest there.

3. North Carolina Transportation Museum

Located at a site that was originally Southern Railway’s largest steam locomotive repair facility, this museum covers the history of rail, automotive, and aviation history. The museum’s visitors centre is situated in the 1898 Barber Junction Depot, and the exhibits include a full-size replica Wright Flyer, antique automobiles, and a restored WWII-era Army Hospital Car.

With a 25-minute train tour of the museum grounds, and busy calendar of events, including “A Day Out With Thomas”, the museum is interactive and family-friendly. So, if you’re planning a day out, you can load the kids and their friends into your seven-seater Toyota Highlander Hybrid and head down for an experience that they’ll always remember.

4. The African American Heritage Trail

This self-guided tour will take you to visit key sites in the history of people of color in Salisbury, including the Joseph Ballard marker, commemorating the emancipated slave, blacksmith, and politician, and the site of Lincoln School, Salisbury’s only education center for African Americans until 1922.
