Salisbury, NC, the county seat of Rowan County, is known for its incredible history. It's the oldest continuously-populated colonial town in the area and has ten National Register Historic Districts as well as five Local Historic Districts. The Salisbury Railway Passenger Station The Salisbury Railway Passenger Station was constructed in 1908 in the Spanish Mission style by Frank P. Milburn. It served as a mainline station between Atlanta, Georgia and Washington, D.C. Eventually, the station became vacant and was neglected. The Salisbury Railway Passenger Station was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 and, in 1984, it was bought by the Historic Salisbury Foundation. The Historic Salisbury Foundation spent more than 3.1 million dollars to restore the station. It now houses the Salisbury Amtrak Station, Studio 35, and the Historic Salisbury Foundation's offices. 2. The Hall House Originally, the Hall House was supposed to the Salisbury Female Academy's classrooms. In 1825, Maxwell Chambers and Rebecca Troy purchased the property and Dr. Josephus Hall purchased it in 1859. Dr. Hall transformed it into a beautiful residence. After serving four generations of the Hall family, the Historic Salisbury Foundation purchased the building in 1972. Today, visitors can see the original wallpapers, furnishings, and painted ceilings. The desk that Andrew Jackson used in the 1780s and a cannon used Salisbury's Civil War Prison era can also be found at the Hall House. 3. The Brooklyn-South Square Historic District The Brooklyn-South Square Historic District is just one of Salisbury's many historic districts. It consists of 65 buildings and was mostly developed between 1875 and 1925. In 1985, the National Register of Historic Places recognized this district. Some of the most notable buildings in the Brooklyn-South Square Historic District are the Cross-Crowell-Rufty Store from the 1920s, the Woodson-Overcash House from c. 1840, and Blackmer-Propst House from c. 1856, and the former St. Peter's Episcopal Church. 4. The North Main Street Historic District In 1985, this area was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It consists of 123 buildings that were mainly developed between 1900 and 1930. There are many incredible examples of Colonial Revival, Bungalow / American Craftsman, and Late Victorian-style architecture. Visitors can see the Hines-Norman House, the A. G. Peeler House, the Trexler-McSwain Store, the North Main Street School, the Davis-Wilhelm House, the J. R. Crawford House, and more! 5. The Rowan Museum The Rowan Museum can be found in the 1854 courthouse. It managed to survive General Stoneman's raid during the Civil War and remains an incredible example of pre-Civil War architecture. If you're a fisherman, you already know that one of the most relaxing activities a person can do is to grab a rod and reel and head out to the lake to catch some fish. It's even better if you can find top fishing spots near your home that allow you to take short trips more often. If you're living in Salisbury, NC, try one of these excellent fishing locations. more #1: Lake Norman State Park Just a half an hour away by car, Lake Norman State Park is the home of the largest manmade lake in the state. If you own your own boat, you can access Lake Norman using the free boat launch located on Boat Launch Drive. You can also rent a kayak or canoe from the Visitor Center, or fish from the shore. You can expect to haul in fish species such as bluegill, perch, crappie, catfish, and several varieties of bass. #2: Morrow Mountain State Park Travel 40 minutes from Salisbury and you'll find yourself at Morrow Mountain State Park, where you can fish from the shore, a pier, or a boat. Bring your own boat to launch from the free public boat ramp, or rent a canoe or kayak from the park's boathouse for just $5.00 per hour. This lake is known for its crappie, perch, white bass, striped bass, bluegill, and catfish. You must have a valid North Carolina fishing license to fish here. #3: Pilot Mountain State Park If you're looking for a quaint place to camp and fish, Pilot Mountain State Park is a wonderful choice. You can fish for smallmouth bass, striped bass, and catfish, then paddle your canoe to your campsite on the south bank of the Yadkin River. There are other, more modern campsites available at this park as well, but if you want a rustic experience, camp at one of the two canoe campsites and truly connect with nature. #4: Hanging Rock State Park Travel a little further from Salisbury (about an hour and 15 minutes) to take advantage of the picturesque Hanging Rock State Park. You'll enjoy spectacular views in this park, as well as abundant fishing opportunities for catfish, sunfish, and bass. You're sure to catch your fill by either fishing from a boat on the lake, or by wading into the shallower parts of the Dan River. #5: Andrew Jackson State Park While motorized boats are not allowed on the lake at Andrew Jackson State Park, you can rent fishing boats for a nominal fee to take advantage of the well-stocked, 18-acre lake. You can also bring your own boat if it is not motorized and can be hand-carried from the parking area to the lake. You can catch crappie, catfish, bass, and bream, but be sure to have a South Carolina fishing license for this out-of-state fishing spot.
