If you’re wondering how safe the Toyota Camry is, the awards say it all.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave this sedan a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating. This award shows that the 2019 Camry performs well in crash tests. If a collision occurs, its sturdy structure and 10 standard airbags can protect you.

Additionally, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named the Camry a 2019 TOP SAFETY PICK+. This is the highest accolade this entity provides, and means the sedan got top marks in areas like:

• Crash avoidance and mitigation
• LATCH availability and ease of use

Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P)

The Camry also comes standard with TSS-P, a suite of high-tech safety features that can help prevent collisions. It uses sensors throughout the vehicle to stay aware of vehicles, pedestrians, and lane markers.

This includes Lane Departure Alert (LDA), which provides an audio alert if you begin to drift out of your lane. It works together with Steering Assist (SA), which gently guides you back to the center of your lane.

Meanwhile, the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/ PD) uses a front-facing camera and radar sensors to see vehicles or pedestrians ahead of you. If it senses a possible collision, it warns you to brake. If this collision seems otherwise unavoidable, it can even apply brake pressure to slow the Camry down.

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is nice when you’re on the highway, because it keeps you at a set distance from the vehicle in front of you. This means you don’t need to turn cruise control off when you hit a patch of traffic.
